It's ok if some people don't get it

How to do good creative work – Practical advice for marketing leaders and their design teams

It sounds like life advice, but it makes sense for creative work too.

There have been occasions where I’ve been in a room and everyone is happy with the thing we’ve just pitched.

I am torn in this situation.

On the one hand, everyone likes it. Yay! On the other, I’m wondering if we haven’t pushed it far enough. Really good creative should be a little bit challenging. Really good creative allows your organisation to make big leaps. But big leaps require unconventional thinking, and unconventional thinking is not, by definition, universal.

In many ways, it comes down to ambition. What is the ambition for this piece of work? Not every piece of work needs to change the world, but if you want it to make a big impact and have more influence, then you need to be confident managing the naysayers.

Takeaways

  • Think about the impact the work needs to have. That helps decide how far to push the work

  • Have the confidence to fight for the work when not everyone likes it. You might be onto something.
